What to Consider when Buying Fertilizer for St Augustine Grass?

Applying a good quality fertilizer will bring better results to your St Augustine grass. But it’s quite a difficult thing to find a fertilizer that will benefit your St Augustine lawn with minimal effort. That’s why to get the best results from a fertilizer, here are the things you need to consider.

1. Organic or Synthetic Fertilizer

No matter which fertilizer you choose, your first concern should be ‘safety’ for both you and the environment. When talking about safety, what can be a better option than organic fertilizers? Yes, we do agree that organic fertilizers are a safer option. However, safety is not the only thing we should be concerned about, we need to think about efficiency as well.

Synthetic fertilizers are more likely to show faster results compared to organic fertilizers. Oh, one more thing, don’t forget the smell! Organic fertilizers smell pretty bad while synthetic fertilizers are not as stinky as those organic ones. But synthetic fertilizers may damage the natural balance of pH in the soil.

So, choose the one that you are comfortable with. And if you choose synthetic fertilizer, make sure you don’t use too much of it.

2. Quick-release or Slow-release

A quick-release fertilizer will give you results rapidly. If you want to see your lawn thrive in a short time, this is the thing you need. However, you will remain busy throughout the grass growing season because you will need to apply the fertilizer multiple times.

A slow-release fertilizer will work slowly and will keep providing nutrients to your grass for a long time. You may not notice changes in a short time but it will save you from applying fertilizer every now and then.

3. Types of Fertilizers

Granular: Granular fertilizers are generally slow-releasing. Its benefit is that it will provide nutrients for a comparatively longer time. Another great thing about this fertilizer is that you won’t need to fertilize frequently.

Liquid: If your goal is to achieve results quickly, you can go for liquid fertilizers. The liquid usually gets absorbed quickly. So, if everything is okay, chances are you will start to notice results within a week! But liquid fertilizers may require frequent application.

Water-soluble: From the physical appearance, water-soluble fertilizers are in granular form. But this one will work quite fast like liquid fertilizers.

This totally depends on your preferences. Because at the end of the day, you are the one who will apply the fertilizer. So, choose one that you think is best for your lawn.

4. N-P-K Ratio

The term N-P-K ratio means the ratio of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium in a fertilizer. All of these nutrients are important for the healthy growth of St. Augustine grass.

However, soils can’t provide enough Nitrogen for St. Augustine grass in many cases. As a result, the growth of St. Augustine grass remains less than desired.

That’s why you need to choose a fertilizer that not only ensures a balanced N-P-K ratio but also provides enough Nitrogen so that your St. Augustine grass gets better growth as you expected.

When to Fertilize St Augustine Grass?

When it comes to maintaining the elegant St. Augustine grass with fertilizer and manure, the question “When” is quite crucial. So let’s deal with the troubling issue.

January to April

Have you fixed your soil pH with a soil test? If you are planning to grow Carpet Grass, choose late summers or early spring for that. It gives you a more useful fertilizing result correcting lacks.

May to August

It is the time of the sowing year when you can go for a fertilizer rich in Nitrogen. Don’t skip to add P, K, and other essential nutrients too!

How to Spread Fertilizer on St. Augustine Turf?

It’s required to grasp the dos and don’ts when you are about to fertilize your carpet grass lawn. Why? It is because, with the wrong way to use mulch, you can end up burning your entire yard.

So, let’s find how to spread the manure!

  • After you’ve completed the soil test and mowing, it’s time for a compost top-dresses of half an inch.
  • Opt for a slow-release fertilizer after your third time of mowing. Apply at a rate of 1-1.5 pounds per 1,000 feet.
  • Follow the second step every ten weeks when your grass is in its growth stage.
  • Near the frosting seasons? It’s time to change to high potash yet low nitrogen manure.
  • At least six weeks prior to the first frosting, apply mulch rich in potash at a rate of 0.5 pounds for every 1,000 square feet area of lawn.
  • Say no to fertilizer in the months October to February.
  • Don’t neglect to add weed killers and water only as per needs!!

How Much Fertilizer Does St. Augustine Grass Need?

Applying the right amount of fertilizer is extremely important because if you apply the fertilizer in a little amount, your lawn will remain hungry and you will not get to see that beautiful lush green lawn you were looking for. And if you apply too much fertilizer, you will end up burning your turfgrass.

So, you can follow this simple rule of applying fertilizer where you need to maintain 1 pound of nitrogen for a 1,000 sq. ft. lawn. For bigger areas, the rate will increase while maintaining the ratio. However, this may not be accomplished like a piece of cake because the N-P-K level of fertilizers may vary from brand to brand.

That’s why you need to divide the number of Nitrogen (N) from the N-P-K ratio of the fertilizer by 100. You will find the N-P-K ratio on the label of the fertilizer. Next, we need to multiply the resultant number by 1000. After that, divide 1000 by the product of that multiplication. The resultant number will be the amount of fertilizer (in pounds) you need for a 1,000 sq. ft. lawn.

How Do I Make My St. Augustine Grass Thicker?

Here are the 6 ways to make your St. Augustine grass thicker.

Preparing the Soil: Acidic soil with proper drainage is an ideal duo for St. Augustine grass. So, if you want a thriving lawn, ensure proper draining and a pH level in the 5.0-8.5 range.

Planting Early: Plant the seed plugs or sods in early summer. A moist and warm soil of summer will help your grass achieve healthy growth to tolerate the higher temperature when summer is at its fullest.

Proper Fertilization: To make your lawn thrive, you need to give your grass a proper combination of Phosphorus fertilizer and Nitrogen fertilizer.

Watering and Drainage: For a lush green lawn, ensure enough water for your St. Augustine grass. And don’t let the water make your lawn a pool! So, choose a better drainage system.

Controlling Weeds: Hand pluck the weeds or use a special type of mild herbicide to control weeds. Choose the herbicide carefully.

Proper Mowing: Mowing at the right time will keep your grass healthy and give your lawn an amazing look.

Should Turf or Sod Be Watered after Fertilizing?

After fertilizing, it’s important to ensure your St. Augustine grass gets proper watering. This will help break down the fertilizer and kickstart the process of providing nutrients to your plants. However, don’t rush to water your lawn just after fertilizing. To get better results from the fertilizer, wait at least 24 hours before you give your lawn a shower.

You can choose early morning for watering your grass, this time can be considered an ideal time for watering. Watering at midday when the sun is straight on top is not a good time to water the grass. Also, avoid watering your grass at night.

  1. I have large areas of very little grass because of huge live oaks and shade. I have St Augustine in other areas. Not sure what to do?? Would seeding with Burmuda shade tolerant be best way to go?

    • You can also cover the rest areas with St Augustine grass if you have no other significant problem. If you are from USDA Zones 7-10, you can successfully grow a lawn mixing Bermuda Grass with St. Augustine.

Note: I am covering the topic in-depth in my another article soon.

    • Bermuda will not grow in the shade. We also have a lot of oak trees. You can have the canopy of your trees trimmed to let some sunlight through but be careful when you have it done because of oak wilt. Other than that, you would have to consider some type of ground cover instead.
